Victorian households can now claim a cash rebate of up to $120 on a new induction cooktop, and up to $60 on an energy efficient fridge, freezer, clothes dryer or TV. The money comes from the Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program, and MAC Trade Services handles the claim for you.

It works like this. You buy the appliance first, keep the tax invoice, then lodge your claim online. The rebate lands in your bank account once your claim is approved. There is no voucher to redeem at the counter and nothing extra to do in store.

Here is everything you need to know about the Victorian energy rebate for appliances, who can claim it, and how to get your money back.

What is the VEU rebate?

The Victorian Energy Upgrades program is a Victorian Government scheme that helps homes and businesses cut their power bills by switching to more efficient appliances. The VEU rebate for appliances pays you cash back after you buy an eligible model.

The rebate ranges from $60 to $120, depending on the appliance.

Your purchase needs to tick a few boxes before you can claim.

  • The appliance must be brand new, not second-hand.

  • You must buy it within Victoria. Online purchases count, as long as they are made in Victoria.

  • The appliance must be for use in a home or business in Victoria.

  • Residential customers pay a minimum co-payment of $200 including GST towards the appliance.

  • The exact model must be on the eligible product list. You can check this on the MAC Trade Services website before you buy.

One thing that catches people out is the induction cooktop rule. Homes can claim one, but businesses cannot claim any.

How MAC Trade Services fits in

MAC Trade Services is the VEU provider that processes VEU appliance rebate claims. Bi-Rite sells you the appliance. MAC Trade Services checks your claim and pays the rebate. You deal with them directly, not with the store.

That split matters. It means you pay the full price at Bi-Rite on the day, then claim the cash back afterwards. MAC Trade Services checks that your model is eligible, reviews your tax invoice and signed application, and transfers the rebate into your bank account.

You can reach MAC Trade Services in three ways.

If you spot a flyer in store, the QR code takes you straight to the claim page.

Appliances you can claim on at Bi-Rite

Induction cooktops, rebate up to $120

The induction cooktop rebate is the biggest on offer. Induction heats the pan directly instead of the air around it, so less energy goes to waste and the kitchen stays cooler. It is also quick. A pot of water boils noticeably faster than on gas or a ceramic top. If you have been thinking about moving off gas, the rebate takes a little of the sting out of the switch.

Clothes dryers, rebate up to $60

Energy efficient dryers, like heat pump models, reuse warm air rather than venting it outside. They cost more upfront than a vented dryer but use far less power each load. For a family running the dryer most days through a Melbourne winter, that adds up.

Fridges and freezers, rebate up to $60

Your fridge runs 24 hours a day, so its star rating has a bigger effect on your bill than almost any other appliance. Homes can claim on as many eligible fridges and freezers as they buy, which makes this a handy rebate if you are replacing an old second fridge in the garage too.

High efficiency TVs also qualify for up to $60, with a limit of two per home.

How to claim your Victorian energy rebate

The whole claim is done online and takes about as long as filling in a warranty card.

  1. Check your model is eligible. On the MAC Trade Services site, pick the appliance type, brand and model from the drop-down lists. If your model is there, you are good to go.

  2. Buy the appliance. Purchase it new from Bi-Rite, in store or online, within Victoria.

  3. Keep your tax invoice. This is your proof of purchase. MAC Trade Services needs it to approve the claim, so do not throw it out with the packaging.

  4. Fill in the application form. Enter your details, agree to the terms, conditions and privacy policy, and sign the form on screen.

  5. Upload your invoice. Attach a clear photo or scan of the tax invoice.

  6. Get paid. MAC Trade Services reviews your claim and pays the rebate into your bank account.

Check eligibility before you buy, not after. It takes a minute and saves you finding out later that your chosen model is not on the list.
