Or go bigger
Before you buy: check where it will go
- On a cabinet: the cabinet should be wider than the TV's stand and deep enough for its feet. Check the TV's width, depth and weight in the product specs.
- On the wall: mount it so the centre of the screen is at eye level when you're sitting, always fix into studs, and check the bracket's weight limit. See wall mounts.
TV size guide by viewing distance
Bi-Rite's recommended viewing distance for 4K Ultra HD TVs, based on a 30° viewing angle (the most comfortable). For Full HD or HD, go one size smaller.
| TV size | Sit this far away |
|---|---|
| 24"–40" | Under 1.70 m (secondary rooms) |
| 43" | 1.70 m – 1.85 m |
| 50" | 1.85 m – 2.10 m |
| 55"–58" | 2.10 m – 2.45 m |
| 65" | 2.45 m – 2.80 m |
| 70"–75" | 2.80 m – 3.30 m |
| 85" | 3.30 m – 3.70 m |
| 100" | 4.00 m – 4.50 m |
Before you buy, measure these
TV sizes are measured corner to corner and only count the screen, not the frame or stand. Check the product's specifications for the full width, height, depth and weight.
Wall space
Check the width and height you have. A big TV may not fit between windows or next to a doorway.
Cabinet size
Your cabinet should be wider than the TV's base. Measure its depth too, so the stand feet fit.
Viewing angle
Mark where the middle of the TV will be, then sit where you'd watch. The centre should be at eye level.
Power point
Make sure there's a power point close by. If not, plan how you'll hide the cables.
How we work it out
No lab maths, just Bi-Rite's own viewing guide and a few honest adjustments for how you'll use it.
1. Distance sets the size
We start with how far you sit from the screen and match it to Bi-Rite's own viewing guide, which is built around the most comfortable viewing angle for most people.
2. How you watch fine-tunes it
Movies, sport and media rooms nudge the size up. Bedrooms nudge it down. Your answers only change the size, not which TVs we show.
3. We check it fits
We make sure you're not sitting too close for the size, and that the TV fits the space you gave us. Then we show the TVs in our range that match.
TV size FAQs
What size TV should I get?
The right size depends on how far you sit from the screen. If your couch is 2.5 to 3 m from the TV, a 65 to 75 inch screen will suit. Enter your distance into our calculator for an exact recommendation.
What size TV do I need for my viewing distance?
Match your viewing distance to Bi-Rite’s viewing guide below. As a check, multiply the TV size in inches by 1.2 to get the closest you should sit, for example 75 inches × 1.2 = 90 inches (2.3 m). At 3 m, that means a 70 to 75 inch screen is a good fit.
| Viewing distance | Recommended TV size |
|---|---|
| 2 m | 50 inch |
| 2.5 m | 65 inch |
| 3 m | 70 to 75 inch |
| 3.5 m | 85 inch or larger |
These sizes assume a 4K TV. Measure from the front of your couch cushion to the screen.
What is the best viewing distance for a TV?
For a 4K TV, Bi-Rite’s viewing guide is based on a 30 degree viewing angle, which is the most comfortable for most people. For a 65 inch TV, that’s 2.45 to 2.8 m. The 30 degree angle comes from SMPTE, the film and TV engineering body. THX recommends about 40 degrees for a cinema feel, so sitting a little closer is fine if you want a more immersive picture.
| TV size | Viewing distance |
|---|---|
| 43 inch | 1.70 to 1.85 m |
| 50 inch | 1.85 to 2.10 m |
| 55 to 58 inch | 2.10 to 2.45 m |
| 65 inch | 2.45 to 2.80 m |
| 70 to 75 inch | 2.80 to 3.30 m |
| 85 inch | 3.30 to 3.70 m |
| 100 inch | 4.00 to 4.50 m |
How big is a 65 inch TV?
A 65 inch TV screen is about 144 cm wide and 81 cm high, with a diagonal of 165 cm. Add 1 to 3 cm for the frame, depending on the model. Here’s how other common sizes compare.
| Size | Diagonal | Width | Height |
|---|---|---|---|
| 32 inch | 81 cm | 71 cm | 40 cm |
| 40 inch | 102 cm | 89 cm | 50 cm |
| 50 inch | 127 cm | 111 cm | 62 cm |
| 55 inch | 140 cm | 122 cm | 69 cm |
| 65 inch | 165 cm | 144 cm | 81 cm |
| 75 inch | 191 cm | 166 cm | 93 cm |
| 85 inch | 216 cm | 188 cm | 106 cm |
These are screen sizes only. Check the spec sheet for the full size with the stand attached.
How wide is a 75 inch TV?
A 75 inch TV screen is about 166 cm wide, or 167 to 170 cm including the frame. If it’s going into a recess or between two shelves, measure that gap first and leave a few centimetres spare for airflow.
How do you measure TV size?
Measure a TV screen diagonally, from the top-left corner to the bottom-right corner of the picture area. It does not include the stand, bezel or any other part of the TV. TVs are sold in inches, so a 65 inch TV has a screen that measures 65 inches, or 165 cm, from corner to corner. It does not mean the TV is 65 inches wide.
How many centimetres is a 55 inch TV?
A 55 inch TV is 139.7 cm measured diagonally. To convert any TV size, multiply the inches by 2.54. The screen itself is about 122 cm wide and 69 cm high.

This calculator is a guide. It uses Bi-Rite's recommended viewing distances for 4K TVs and adjusts for what you watch and your room. Seating height, eyesight and personal taste matter too, so please check the product specifications for exact sizes, or see the TVs in store. Prices and availability can change.
Measure your wall with a photo
Stand straight in front of the wall where the TV will go. Try to get a door in the shot, as we use it to work out the scale.
Your photo stays on your device. It's never uploaded or saved.
- Enough light
- Phone held still
- Phone held level
- Picture in focus
We can't measure from this photo
- Drag the 4 yellow corners onto the corners of a × m on the same wall as the TV.
- Drag the blue line across the space where the TV will go.
Marking all 4 corners lets us allow for the angle of the wall, so it still works if you took the photo side-on. Two things throw it out: a door that isn't a standard size (glass doors that reach the ceiling are often taller than 2.04 m, so measure it and choose "something I've measured"), and a TV space that's set further back or forward than the door, even if it faces the same way.
